This energy-efficient residence integrates a large home onto a small site. The owner, acting as the general contractor, desired to maintain a large backyard and mature trees while building a house large enough for his family of six.
Given the solar access requirements for the city of Boulder, the tallest parts of the building are on the South side and step down so as not to shade the adjacent lot. The stair tower becomes the major design element and contains six horizontal windows—one for each member of the family. The main floor contains an away space incorporated into the foyer for the wife to relax with a cup of tea, an open plan living-dining-kitchen space giving the wife full views from her command post in the kitchen, a mud room, a powder room and a play room.
On the second floor, there is the master suite, a home office, laundry room, and children’s area with a built-in study desk, a boys’ room, a girls’ room and a large shared bath. The children’s bath is cleverly designed so that all four children can use it at the same time. The third floor has a small perch for a chess game and a door opening onto the roof top deck which provides an exhilarating view of nearby mountains. The basement contains the husband’s impressive collection of beer nostalgia, a large TV, and plenty of cold beer on tap.
The house is built using Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF) and Structurally Insulated Panels (SIP). Radiant heat and high-performance windows help keep the house comfortable, while a solar PV and thermal system provide renewable energy sources. It is just under 5,000 square feet and total costs for the project were about $152 per square foot.
