| THE KOHLER TWINS
BUILDER TerraGreen Homes
ARCHITECT VaST architecture
The builder affectionately named these two TerraGreen spec homes -- built on adjacent lots -- “the twins” early in the design process. As a way to imbue each with its own personality and sense of style, they became the “brother” (2610 Kohler) and the “sister” (2606 Kohler) as the concepts were developing. Although they are “siblings” they each have their own unique characteristics. Their physical features are distinctly different but they share similar internal attributes.
Brother is a contemporary, two-story farmhouse designed with a large, active family in mind. He stands proud on a hillside, allowing for spectacular views from the second floor deck. His look is more masculine and rural with a distinctively modern twist. He is accented with rustic surfaces such as reclaimed snow fence from Wyoming and woven bamboo floors. The main floor is 1,733 SF, the second floor is 2,308 SF, and there is a two-car garage with a “nanny” suite above and a 960 SF basement with a theater and wine cellar.
Sister is a sleek, sophisticated two-story house that is simple yet chic. She doesn't mind being perched on a hillside alongside her more rustic brother, as long as you don't mess with her pristine white walls. Her purist interior consists of polished concrete floors, white marble countertops and grey volcanic stone tile. The same simple yet elegant monochromatic color scheme is repeated throughout and carried out to the exterior. The entire front facade of the house is presented in a delicate white offset recycled content brick tile that is trimmed in grey. The bi-level main floor is 1,680 SF, and the second floor is 1,680 SF. Sister also has a two-car garage and a 1,104 SF basement with a theater and wine cellar.
Although Brother and Sister are distinctly different in appearances they are similar in that they share the same high-performance attributes when it comes to their core and shell. Both Brother and Sister are constructed with Structurally Insulated Panels (SIP) and Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF). Both have photovoltaic (7.38 Kw and 9.8 Kw) and solar thermal systems accompanied by evaporative cooling and in-floor radiant heat. Other features they share are high-performance windows and HVAC systems, energy efficient appliances, dual flush toilets and low to no VOC paint by Safecoat and Yolo.
