The dreaded figure: $4 a gallon for gas

PEDAL POWER -- Jacob and Joseph quoted in the Daily Camera

"In Boulder, the bike-to-work crowd is a noticeable presence. And the numbers may grow as more people trade in their gas guzzlers for economical and environmental two-wheelers.

Jacob Lovoi, 24, of Boulder, considers himself a devoted bike rider. In his almost four months as an employee of Vast Architecture in Boulder, he has driven to work only one day — when he had to pick up supplies.

“I personally hope gas prices keep going up,” he said, adding that he would want to see more people make the eco-friendly choice.

His co-worker and fellow bike rider Joseph Vigil, 40, agreed as the two briefly stopped near the crosswalk of a downtown intersection on their ride to a project meeting from work.

Conscious of gas costs and concerned about the environment, Vigil not only bikes when he can, but he also recently bought a Prius.

The Toyota hybrid car gets 50 miles per gallon. Now Vigil’s 30-miles-per-gallon Volkswagen sits at home, mostly unused."
